Dr. Megan MacKenzie, Director and Simons Chair in the School for International Studies and co-Director of the Research Network on Women, Peace and Security. She is one of the world’s leading experts on gender and war, military culture gender, bias and discrimination in large institutions, and post-conflict reconstruction. Her interdisciplinary research has shaped and informed public conversations and policies related to military sexual violence, the integration of women into the military, and addressing systemic forms of discrimination in the military. Recent publications include, Good Soldiers Don’t Rape: the stories we tell about military sexual violence (Cambridge University Press 2023). In addition to her work on military culture, Dr. MacKenzie has been a fierce advocate of equity, diversity and inclusion both in her research and her service to the discipline. She co-led a major study on racism and sexism in academia (forthcoming), co-published an article exploring how gender and racial bias impacts individual access to care in pharmacies (2021), and has collaborated on a research project examining obstacles to EDI initiatives within the university (2022).

Network Goals

Dr. MacKenzie has been studying military culture and gender integration in the military for over a decade, and, through the research network, will continue to work on issues such as military sexual violence, suicidality in defence forces, and systemic racism.

Through the network Dr. MacKenzie will continue her work mentoring early career scholars, particularly women and racialized scholars.

Dr. MacKenzie will continue to work on issues of equity within academia and ensure that the network operates in a way that allows underrepresented scholars to thrive, feel supported, and build their future careers.
